The teacher is absent المُدرسُ غائِبٌ
(Subject ) المُدَرِّسُ: مُبْتَدَأ ومرفوع
(Predicate) غائِبٌ: خَبَر ومرفوع
كان and ليس have to have a مُبتَدأ و خبر always like we talked about but when كان و ليس are placed in front of the مبتدأ، the name changes and the cases change also.
The teacher was absent : كان المدرسُ غائبًا
المدرس: اِسْمُ كان مَرفوع
غائبًا: خَبَر كان منصوب
ليس is in the same family and has the same effect on the مبتدأ و خبر
The teacher is not absent :ليس المدرسُ غائبًا
المدرسُ: اِسْمُ ليس مرفوع
غائبًا: خَبر ليس منصوب
I have provided the conjugation chart that I promised you and I hope it will be helpful to you. Now that you have it, I would like you again to go over the work sheet that we did in class and place the appropriate لَيسَ form of the verb and translate the sentence for me. Also don't forget to place the appropriate case. This is not due for me until November 20th. Place كان, translate and also place the appropriate sign, then do the same for ليس
مَحمودٌ شُجاعٌ _____ محمود شجاع
الأَصْنامُ ضَخْمَةٌ ـــــــــــــ الأصنام ضخمة
أَنتَ سَمينٌ ـــــــــــــ سمين
أَنتِ سَمينةٌ ــــــــــــــ سمينة
نحن جميلون ـــــــــــــ جميلَين
(M)هُما مَفتوحان ـــــــــــــ مَفتوحَين

Verses from the Quran of كان
١. أُولَـٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ اشْتَرَوُا الضَّلَالَةَ بِالْهُدَىٰ فَمَا رَبِحَت تِّجَارَتُهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا مُهْتَدِينَ (البقرة:16)
Those are the ones who have purchased error [in exchange] for guidance, so their transaction has brought no profit, nor were they guided.
٢. وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ آمَنُوا وَاتَّقَوْا لَمَثُوبَةٌ مِّنْ عِندِ اللَّـهِ خَيْرٌ ۖلَّوْ كَانُوا يَعْلَمُونَ (البقرة: 103)
And if they had believed and feared Allah , then the reward from Allah would have been [far] better, if they only knew.
٣. قُلْ إِن كَانَتْ لَكُمُ الدَّارُ الْآخِرَةُ عِندَ اللَّـهِ خَالِصَةً مِّن دُونِ النَّاسِ فَتَمَنَّوُا الْمَوْتَ إِن كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ (البقرة: 94)
Say, [O Muhammad], "If the home of the Hereafter with Allah is for you alone and not the [other] people, then wish for death, if you should be truthful.
Verses from the Quran of ليس
١.قَالُوا يَا لُوطُ إِنَّا رُسُلُ رَبِّكَ لَن يَصِلُوا إِلَيْكَ ۖ فَأَسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍ مِّنَ اللَّيْلِ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنكُمْ أَحَدٌ إِلَّا امْرَأَتَكَ ۖ إِنَّهُ مُصِيبُهَا مَا أَصَابَهُمْ ۚ إِنَّ مَوْعِدَهُمُ الصُّبْحُ ۚ أَلَيْسَ الصُّبْحُ بِقَرِيبٍ(هود: 81)
The angels said, "O Lot, indeed we are messengers of your Lord; [therefore], they will never reach you. So set out with your family during a portion of the night and let not any among you look back - except your wife; indeed, she will be struck by that which strikes them. Indeed, their appointment is [for] the morning. Is not the morning near?"
١. وَلَئِنْ أَخَّرْنَا عَنْهُمُ الْعَذَابَ إِلَىٰ أُمَّةٍ مَّعْدُودَةٍ لَّيَقُولُنَّ مَا يَحْبِسُهُ ۗ أَلَا يَوْمَ يَأْتِيهِمْ لَيْسَ مَصْرُوفًا عَنْهُمْ وَحَاقَ بِهِم مَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ (هود:8)
And if We hold back from them the punishment for a limited time, they will surely say, "What detains it?" Unquestionably, on the Day it comes to them, it will not be averted from them, and they will be enveloped by what they used to ridicule.
