A2HW5: Rule of wow leen/ya leen + more discussion about long vowels

For the Class Date: 12/18/2022, Following homework is due on 12/25/2022 


Following long vowels letter rules should be clear now
  1. long vowel letter in the beginning of a word is always a letter
  2. long vowel letter in the middle/end of a word is always a long vowel (2 length long)
  3. long vowel letter in the middle/end of a word with a short vowel on it is always a letter.
  4. how does Quranic text treat the long vowels and use the short vowels on letter before.
  5. How to manage long vowel letters in the middle/end of a word if they have sukoon on it.
  • few situations left to discuss
    • when two long vowels come next to each other
    • are long vowel letters also available in tashkeel (symbol) form

Wow leen and Ya leen Rule
  1. This rule is only wow and ya.  
  2. It is applied if wow or ya have a sukoon on it and letter before them have a fathah on it
  3. In this case, it creates a "swing" sound such as cycle, layla.  page 28 has examples and we tried them in the class with teachers

Please write left column on page 28, each word on a line.  Only right that one column.  
You can ignore the right column for now.  write each word on a line, even if you have to fill 2 pages!

A2HW4: Discussion about long vowel letters

Once again, we discussed the pronunciation of many similar sounding letters and understood the 
need to pronounce them correctly

also discussed long vowel letters in more detail.  following situations should be clear!
  • long vowel letter in the beginning of a word is always a letter

A2HW3: completing all past homeworks

Reading rules books with few more pages was distributed which does include the vocabulary and Syllabus pages. 

We agreed and removed all confusion about past homeworks
Two of the past Home works were to write page 26 and Page 16.  we need those next week from anyone who didn't bring it in yet.  Focus of those homeworks was to see your writing skill and impress upon you the importance of pronunciation of a letter (and its length).

Next Homework was writing three set of words focusing on long vowel sounds.  This is due on 12/11/2022.  be sure to bring it with you next week.  It will prepare us for next lesson

A2HW2: preparing for long vowels

Last week, Reading rules handouts were distributed along with vocabulary and Syllabus.  Green Book was distributed to everyone as well.

In the class we discussed the importance of correct pronunciation of letters and practiced saying many similar sounding letter using Alif practice on page 19.  Students demonstrated better procreation to teachers by end of the class.

Homework is listed below.  Please label your homework "A2HW2", put your name and date on it before turning it in the class

Students need to write these words (due on 12/11). It is not necessary for them to correctly read at this  stage.  We practice reading in class but they should be able to recognize where the long vowels are. Students need to circle all the long vowels in 3 pictures below (due tomorrow 12/04)

A2HW1: Alif practice with each letter and how each letter in pronounced

- Short vowels and long vowel discussion is about to start but first we want to understand the role of correction pronciation.  this includes how short or long a letter should be and how the meaning of a word could change if reader changes its length.  We worked on page 16 with Alif practice

Arabic 2 Final exam information for Dec 4th 2022

Date: Sunday December 4th - 18th @ 8 am - finishing at 11:30 am (using zoom as needed)

There is no written exam.  It is all oral exam.  Students will be tested individually or in groups of 2.  Brief talk about test [youTube]

  • Here is a Green book PDF.  Be sure to have your green book with you.  You will asked to read individual words and explain the reading rules applied in that word.
  • All Suraat from Green book (page 64 onwards).  We will have you read 3 of these 8 suraat.  You will be asked to read one word at a time
  • All exercise pages after page 25 in Green Book.
    • Pages 29, 31, 36-37, 42-44, 48-49, 52, 54, 57, 60 and 63.
    • You can also try the audio files of above pages if it helps
  • 2 mistakes are allowed.  3rd time, students should say the words correctly or lose a point
  • Vocabulary: Each student will be asked 10 questions on using the Vocabulary sheet.

Arabic 1 final exam information
